Indiana Highway Ends and Information

Information:

The highway existed back in the early 20th century. Indiana highway consists of multiple routes with its numbered signs going through many cities and states. Indiana highway had multiple changes since its establishment. Between 1918 and 1926, there was  a gradual change in the highway and there was the renumbering of some routes. After that, there were many changes in the highway, some were closed, some were reconstructed. Now, the development of the Indiana Highway is extremely amazing. Many interstates were built in accordance with the new system of the US Department of Highways.

Interstate Highways

I-64- goes across the southern portion of the state, connecting the Louisville and Evansville areas. I-64 itself connects St. Louis and Norfolk via Louisville, Lexington, and Charleston (WV). In Indiana, it is the most recent of interstates having been completed in the late 1970s.

I-65-main Highway in Indiana, connecting three of the five largest urban areas in Indiana (Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville).

I-69- Currently goes from the northwest side of Indianapolis to north of Angola

I-70- is a major highway through Indiana that follows an east-west route through the center of the state. Except for the Indianapolis, it is still only four lanes although long range plans call for making it six lanes across the state.

I-74- was the first Interstate highway completed though the state.

I-80- runs through exteme northern Indiana, running along the Indiana Toll road until changing course at the western border of Gary to bypass Chicago.

I-90- runs across exteme northern Indiana, staying within five miles of Michigan for the majority of the route, but never crossing into the state. It runs entirely on the “Indiana East-West Toll Road” (the only current toll highway in Indiana)

I-94-runs along the Lake Michigan Lakeshore on its way to Chicago, and is cosigned with I-80 and US 6 for the westernmost fifteen miles of its routing into Illinois. The entire length of I-94 is a free route unlike I-90.

I-164- Spur from I-64 into Evansville. When the I-69 extension is built, this road will be absorbed into that route.

*I-165- This highway was planned when, after the highways were numbered.

I-265- Connects I-65 with I-64 in Clarksville and New Albany. At some point in the future, it will connect with the I-265 segment around Louisville and will take over SR 265.

I-275-As the part of the Cincinnati bypass, it actually has a single interchange within the Indiana portion. I-275 is the only 3 digit Interstate passing through three states. As with most 3dis, the I-275 exit numbering system is common between Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

I-294-This number existed in Indiana when I-94 switched over to the Indiana Toll Road at what’s now Exit 15; since all even numbered interstates were supposed to meet with the original road in two places, I-94 was triplexed over what was then I-80 and I-90.

I-465- Runs around the city of Indianapolis in a full circle. For the entire distance, it is either three to four lanes each direction.

I-469- The eastern Fort Wayne bypass. Construction was begun in the 1980s and it opened in the early 1990s. Both ends of I-469 connect with I-69. Before it was completed, the portions that were open were marked as SR 469.

I-865- This is the section of freeway that connects the northern leg of I-465 to I-65 near Zionsville. While it has no exits and acts as pair of ramps between 465 and 65 points north, its length makes the numbering necessary.
Believe it or not, I-865 was an original portion of I-465.
